mckenna’s story

Hi! I’m McKenna! (she/her/hers) I was born and raised in Texas, but never felt like I fit in. After living in Colorado for two years and it still not feeling completely right, we decided to move to PNW to live near family. I’m glad that we did, because I feel like I’ve finally found my home. I live in Portland with my husband, two children, and our cat, Arya.  I love art and music.

Before pursuing a degree in social work, I studied Graphic Design. I try to keep both as a part of my everyday life. In my free time, I enjoy playing video games, diamond painting, and playing my ukulele.   I have always enjoyed volunteering and working with children, so pursuing a degree in social work felt natural.

After the pandemic, I saw a need in the community for more support, so I started seeing young adults. I believe in providing a safe, non-judgemental space for anyone and everyone to heal or make positive changes in their lives. I am passionate about using a strengths based approach to identify and strengthen client’s abilities that they already possess. As a LGBTQIA+ affirming and trauma informed therapist, I work with individuals and families on issues related to anxiety, depression, relationships, trauma, life transitions, self-esteem and identity.

Now for the professional stuff:

I graduated from the University of North Texas with my Bachelor of Social Work in 2018. Before graduating, I received the Adam Main Courage and Perseverance award for my work. I received my Master’s in Social Work with a specialization in direct practice with children and families at the University of Texas in Arlington.

I have experience working with foster care youth, survivors of intimate partner violence, and in school-based services. During my clinical supervision, I was the Director of Family Support Services for the Boys and Girls Club of Weld County where I provided therapy services to club members and trauma-informed care training to the club’s staff.
