  • If you'd like to use your insurance for couples or family therapy, the Primary Client should complete the screening request and provide their insurance information so we can confirm coverage prior to your call. Learn more about using insurance below.

Please ensure you are available by phone at the start time of your scheduled screening call.

How Insurance Works for Couples Therapy

When using insurance for couples or relationship work, services are billed as Family Therapy - a covered service focused on one person's mental health within the context of their closest relationships.

  • One person is designated as the Primary Client, whose diagnosis guides the treatment.

  • Sessions may include partners or other support people.

  • Therapeutic goals focus on improving the Primary Client’s functioning, often by addressing relationship dynamics and communication.

  • The Primary Client is the legal owner of the therapy record. Other participants may only access information with a signed Release of Information (ROI), which can be revoked at any time.

"Family" under Oregon law includes not only biological or legal relatives, but also partners, guardians, caregivers, and other close support people.

When Paying
Out-of-Pocket
is a Better Fit

Ready to Move Forward?

We advise you to pay out of pocket for couples or family therapy if:

  • You want joint ownership of the therapy record (both names on the chart) and share equal access to the record. This may be preferable for contexts where future legal proceedings (e.g., custody disputes, separation, or divorce) could involve questions of access or ownership of records.

  • Your focus is solely on the relationship, rather than one person’s mental health.

  • Neither participant has a mental health diagnosis to support insurance billing.

If you'd like to use insurance for couples or family therapy:

  • The Primary Client should complete the screening request.

  • Plan to use the Primary Client’s insurance plan for session coverage.
