Do I Need a Diagnosis to Start Therapy?

If you’ve been considering therapy but are unsure whether you “qualify,” you’re not alone. Many people wonder if they need a formal diagnosis to start therapy or worry that they need to hit a crisis point before seeking help. At Sprout Therapy PDX, we want to reassure you: you do not need a diagnosis to begin therapy. In fact, therapy can be one of the best ways to explore what you're feeling and figure out what kind of support you need.

Therapy Is for Everyone You don’t need to have a mental health disorder—or even know what you’re struggling with—to start therapy. People come to therapy for a wide range of reasons:

  • Feeling anxious, overwhelmed, or “off”

  • Struggling with relationships

  • Processing past experiences

  • Wanting to build coping tools or grow personally

  • Needing support through life transitions

Whether or not those experiences fit into a specific diagnosis, therapy can help you understand them and feel more grounded.

When a Diagnosis Does Matter In some cases—like using insurance coverage—a diagnosis might be required for billing purposes. If you're using Oregon Health Plan (OHP), PacificSource, Kaiser, or another insurance provider, your therapist may assign a diagnosis that aligns with your symptoms. But this doesn’t define you, and it’s not a prerequisite to getting started.

Your therapist will talk with you openly about this process and how it fits into your care. At Sprout Therapy PDX, we always approach diagnosis with care and collaboration, never judgment.

We Meet You Where You’re At When you begin therapy with us, you’ll start with a phone screening and intake process designed to help us understand your goals and match you with the right therapist. From there, your therapist will work with you to figure out what support looks like—whether that includes a diagnosis or not.

We specialize in working with a wide range of clients, including those seeking:

  • LGBTQ+ affirming therapy

  • Progressive therapists

  • CBT therapy

  • Trauma-informed care

  • Telehealth therapy in North Tabor and across Oregon

You don’t need a label to seek help. If you’re feeling unsure, overwhelmed, or simply curious about therapy, that’s more than enough reason to reach out.

Thinking about starting therapy? You don’t need a diagnosis to begin. Contact Sprout Therapy PDX today to connect with a therapist who meets you where you are.
