paul’s story
Hi, I’m Paul (he/him). A lifelong Pacific Northwesterner, I am originally from Seattle, but have been living in Portland since 2014. Becoming a counselor was a second career for me. After working in both non-profit and tech marketing, I wanted to do something that helped people and aligned more closely with my values.
I believe that anyone can benefit from mental health therapy. Whether it is working to change a situation or learning to tolerate and accept something unchangeable, a more comfortable existence is possible.
It is my job to help folks identify their goals and then collaboratively develop a plan that moves them in that direction. Individuals are the experts on their own lives, and I want to meet my Clients where they are at.
Now for the professional stuff:
I received my BA from the University of Washington and my MA in Professional Mental Health Counseling, from Lewis & Clark. I am an Associate Clinician working under the supervision of Shannon Macminn, LMFT, and Sarah Poulisse, LCSW.
Most recently, I completed my internship at NW Anxiety Institute where I worked with folks managing OCD and acute anxiety disorders. As it is not often affordable or readily available, I am happy to offer Exposure Response Prevention (ERP) training to those who are interested. Additionally, I have volunteered as a crisis call taker and received suicide prevention training.
My approach is client centered and eclectic. However, it is based in third wave behavioral therapy and motivational interviewing. I strive to bring a social justice lens to my work, especially when examining how systems of oppression can affect individuals’ mental health.
I believe identities are important. Here are a few of mine that may help you decide if you think we would be a good fit: I am a cis, straight, male, who is mixed race (half Asian, half Caucasian).
