destiny’s story
Hi! I’m Destiny (she/her).
I believe that every person has the right to the process of healing. As we grow, from childhood to adulthood and on, many challenging things may happen in our lives that we may not fully understand. .My aim as your therapist is to help you dissect those memories and make meaning of those moments while coming up with coping strategies that work with you. These difficulties can be tough to manage within ourselves and our family systems. My goal is to help you navigate those systems. I don’t think that therapy has to be serious all the time; I believe that therapy is something where you should laugh, cry, yell, and feel all of the feelings! With my background as a Latina living with an invisible disability, I recognize the oppressive structures that don’t support BIPOC/Disability populations, and my goal is to empower clients and allow space for those in underprivileged positions.
I enjoy working with BIPOC individuals, couples, teens, and families surrounding issues involving disability, interracial relationships, relationship struggles, identity exploration, blended families, anxiety, depression, transitions, and trauma. It is important for us to discuss values that you may hold closely so we can work toward aligning those values with your therapeutic goals. I want to support your healing process and help you tap into your inner self. I will challenge you and encourage you to dig deep during our time together.
I’m originally from Chicago but grew up as a military child causing me to move every few years. During my time outside of being a therapist, I enjoy moving my body and exercise, nature and hanging by the water, going to watch live music and traveling for shows, spending time with my people, and loving on my shih tzu’s, Theo & Richie!
Now the professional stuff:
I completed my undergraduate degree in Disability & Human Development at the University of Illinois at Chicago, with a minor in psychology. During my time in undergrad, I interned with the city of Chicago, fighting for disability rights. During this time I worked as a caregiver and as a barista who bused tables on the weekend during brunch (I do not miss the chaos of a brunch rush lol!). What drew me to this work was my passion for social justice and my fascination with humans and human relationships. This then led me to Lewis & Clark college to complete my Masters of Arts in Marriage, Couple, and Family Therapy. I utilize Narrative therapy a lot in my work as I believe we all have stories to tell.
I am supervised by Katya Ludwig, LCSW.
