betsy’s story

A woman with long blonde hair, smiling, wearing a brown cardigan over a white top, sitting on a blue chair in a room with green walls, a window with white curtains, and a potted plant in the background.

Hi there! I’m Betsy - I’m a QMHP.

Each of us comes to counseling with unique life experiences, identities, beliefs, and cultural backgrounds. Being a counselor is an honor, and my hope is to meet you where you need me to, with presence, compassion, curiosity, and an open mind.

Challenge is part of the human experience. Our world presents us with hardships, difficulties, and losses. Many of our systems are not organized to help us thrive. I believe that counseling can be a powerful means of support as we move through the seasons of life, when we are struggling or feeling stuck, or when we are on the edge of something that wants to emerge. Through connection, we learn to compassionately accept ourselves and step more fully into our strengths.

I come to this path with a lifelong interest in psychology and holistic healing. My experiences as a parent, acupuncturist, bodyworker, and member of a non-traditional family inform my work.

Outside of Sprout, I love cozying up in Portland’s great coffee shops and bakeries, catching a glimpse of urban wildlife on neighborhood walks, being inspired by live music and local artists, attempting to grow something to eat in my garden, traveling, and chatting it up with strangers wherever I go.

Now for the professional stuff:

I am currently a master’s level student in Clinical Mental Health Counseling at Saybrook University, and I am grateful to be working to support your goals under the guidance of my Clinical Supervisor, Emma Crosby. This means you benefit from two clinicians thinking about your care.

My style is warm, collaborative, attuned, and sometimes playful! I work from a non-pathologizing, strengths-based lens, informed by humanistic, person-centered, existential, and relational-cultural theories.

QMHPs are intern clinicians in the final stage of their master’s program and have completed all of their coursework. Our QMHPs receive frequent supervision, consultation, and guidance from their Clinical Supervisor in treatment planning and the therapeutic process. This means you benefit from two clinicians thinking about your care - bringing more perspectives, more support, and a truly collaborative approach to helping you meet your goals.
