abby’s story
Hi I'm Abby! (she/they)
I'm originally from Canada and I have lived in different pockets of the world throughout my life, finally settling in Portland as my home.
My passion for mental health began in college when I took my first Psychology course. Before joining the peer world I worked as a Direct Support professional and a Residential Counselor with a strong focus on trauma informed advocacy. I got into Peer Support because I once received life changing peer support services and I understand the value and impact it can have.
I am a certified QMHA and Peer Wellness Specialist with lived experience managing anxiety, ADHD, depression, PTSD, psychiatric hospitalization, and religious trauma. I believe my lived experiences shape my worldview allowing me to have an intimate understanding of the hopelessness that comes with the pain of navigating systems in the recovery journey. I am passionate about empowering individuals to discover their own innate strength on their unique path to wellness.
As a peer, I offer a presence grounded in mutual understanding, an empathetic approach to skill building, active listening, authentic communication, and emotional support that inspires internal autonomy and fosters hopeful perspectives.
As a case manager I offer insight on realistic approaches to receiving external care and connections to a wide array of resources in the community.
As a human I enjoy spending time with my cat, being near trees, art therapy, dancing, playing pranks on my roommates and reading sci Fi fantasy novels.
